The CIK has not always officially awarded a world championship title for juniors, with various titles given to trophy races over the years including the 5 Continents Cup, the Juniors Cup and even a Junior World title. However in 2013 full official world championship status was awarded with Italian Alessio Lorandi winning the title over 2 rounds in Italy and Bahrain. In recent years, the junior world championship has attracted more than 100 drivers from more than 40 countries to compete. The title is contested using open OK junior equipment.
