FIA Karting European Championship OK, Sarno: Final - Barnard triumphs and takes the lead of the championship
Max Bernardi
23 August 2020

The Englishman, already second in the first round of Zuera, wins and goes + 7 on his material partner, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, second in the final and in the championship. Third, Joe Turney

  • Taylor Barnard (Rosberg Racing Academy - KR - IAME) started from pole in the final and finished in the lead without ever being challenged by any opponent. The Englishman makes up for the win missed in the first round of Zuera when, after a weekend at the top, he had to concede the first place in the final to his teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli (KR Motorsport - KR - IAME).

  • Antonelli races a perfect final and takes home a second place (less than a second from the first) which leaves the championship fight between him and Barnard open, in view of the last round in Wackersdorf, Germany. Antonelli can only regret the heat lost on Saturday due to an accident with Turney while trying to overtake him. Without that contact he would have had a better starting position in the final and given his pace (his best lap in 56,036, 1 tenth and a half faster than Barnard's) he would certainly have been able to put pressure on the Englishman and fight for victory.

  • On the third step of the podium we find a consistent Joseph Turney (Tony Kart Racing Team - Tony Kart - Vortex) who can do nothing compared to the performances of the two preceding him. Turney also initially managed to grab second place behind Barnard. About halfway through the race, when Antonelli reaches him, he decides not to resist, thus avoiding a battle that would have favored the return of the opponents immediately behind him.

  • In fact, the greatest emotions are offered by the drivers right behind Turney, especially on the last lap. Luigi Coluccio (Kosmic Kart Racing Department - Kosmic Kart - Vortex) and Thomas Ten Brinke (Ricky Flynn Motorsport - Kosmic Kart - Vortex) run practically in tandem, attacked, throughout the final. Until the arrival of an unleashed Nikita Bedrin (Ward Racing - Tony Kart - Vortex) who first overtakes the reigning OKJ World Champion of Ricky Flynn Motorsport and then, in the last corner, also edged Coluccio with an extreme but correct maneuver , which gives him fourth place.

  • Rafael Chaves Camara (Forza Racing - Exprit - TM Racing) also took advantage of Bedrin's maneuver as he reached fifth position right in the lasto corner and completed a comeback of 10 positions from the starting grid.

  • Ten Brinke and Coluccio finish in sixth and seventh position respectively, ahead of Dilano Vant’Hoff (Forza Racing - Exprit - TM Racing), Laurens Van Hoepen (Leclerc By Lennox Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing).

  • Juho Valtanen (KR Motorsport - KR - IAME) rounds out the top-ten. Despite the start from the second position and a weekend at the top, in the final progressively loses positions up to the tenth and does not go beyond a time of 56,643 as his best lap.

  • Noteworthy is the good comeback of James Wharton (Parolin Racing Kart - Parolin - TM Racing) who finished 12th behind Matheus Morgatto (Birel ART Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing), after gaining 15 positions compared to his position on the starting grid. Noah Degnbol (Ward Racing - Tony Kart - Vortex) and Jamie Day (Leclerc By Lennox Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing), respectively, at the end of the race, 15th (+16) and 17 ° (+19) manage to do even better in terms of comeback,

  • On the other hand, the unfortunate Oliver Gray (Leclerc By Lennox Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing) takes the reverse route: the Englishman, on this winning circuit at the recent WSK Euro Series, started sixth and found himself at the far end of the field on the first lap after a collision. It will finish only 28th.
