NYCK DE VRIES – KZ2
Esordio in una gara con il kart a marce per il pilota olandese. Nelle manche la prime partenze in assoluto in KZ2 lo penalizzano e, nella prima rimane attardato per un incidente (20°), mentre nelle altre due fa delle belle rimonte (7° e 4°): peccato che la nebbia del mattino abbia ritardato il programma e lui abbia avuto solo 10 giri per rimontare. Le finali si decidono con la scelta delle gomme: ha avuto ragione chi ha scelto i pneumatici da asciutto in prefinale. De Vries utilizza le “rain” in prefinale ed è fuori dai giochi in entrambe le gare: in prefinale è squalificato dopo la pesa (1 kg sotto il limite) e in finale chiude 15°: 6° fra quelli che avevano, come lui, usato gomme da bagnato anche in prefinale.

“Se si guardano i tempi e le manche, a esclusione delle pecche in partenza che comunque hanno tutti i piloti alla “prima” con i KZ, direi che è stato bravo. Peccato non aver avuto anche la domenica con l’asciutto, se no avremmo visto il vero Nyck. Spiace perché, senza togliere meriti a chi ha vinto, prefinale e finale sono state due gare ‘finte’ vista l’influenza che ha avuto la scelta delle gomme. Va detto che la gestione delle gare da parte dei vertici è stata sbagliata”.
LANCE STROLL – KF3
Prima gara in Europa per il pilota canadese. Nelle prime manche chiude 6°, 7° e 8°. Poi inizia la sfortuna: in una manche incappa in un contatto, finisce ultimo, e il regime di slow lo penalizza rimanendo per tutti e 15 giri della gara, impedendo così la rimonta al pilota. In un’altra manche un incidente lo fa chiudere di nuovo attardato e non si qualifica. Nei ripescaggi (“un autoscontro”) sale fino al 7° posto, salvo poi dover subire un contatto che lo fa chiudere al 18° posto.

“Bene. Ha fatto quello che doveva fare. Era alla prima gara in Europa e un po’ di tensione era da mettere in conto. Abbiamo appositamente voluto correre la Winter che è una gara singola e quindi non avrebbe compromesso un campionato. Ora ha capito come funziona qui da noi. Peccato per quella manche: il regime di slow era giusto, ma è durato tutta la gara. Non valeva la pena fermarsi e ripetere la manche?”.

IL TELAIO CAMBIA COLORE…
L’occasione della Winter Cup era perfetta. Nella prima gara dell’anno il team Chiesa Corse ha voluto introdurre una scocca di un nuovo colore. Non più il bluette caratteristico delle scorse stagioni, ma un grigio argentato che cambia colore a seconda di come lo si osserva: più scuro in alcuni momenti e quasi specchiato in altri. Un restyling delle scocche montate sui kart Zanardi che Dino Chiesa, titolare della factory italiana spiega così: “Il cambio è stato deciso per captare le sensazioni della clientela in previsione della nuova omologa. L’obiettivo è avere qualche indicazione su quale direzione prendere in futuro…”.

THE FIRST RACE OF THE YEAR IS THE WINTER CUP HELD AT THE SOUTH GARDA KARTING LONATO (BS). 2 CHIESA CORSE DRIVERS IN THE LINE UP
NYCK DE VRIES - KZ2
Debut race in the geared kart category for the Dutchman. In the heats, the first start in the KZ2 penalises him and in the first heat an incident puts him back down the pack (20th); in the other two he makes some good comebacks (7th and 4th ): it is a shame that the morning fog delayed the program and he only had 10 laps at his disposal to recuperate for the first result. The finals are decided with the choice of tires: those who chose the dry track tires in the pre-final got it right. De Vries uses the "rain" version in the pre-final and is out of the game in both races: he was disqualified from the pre-final after his weigh-in (1 kg below the limit) and finishes 15th in the final: 6th among those who, like him, used rain tires in the pre-final.

"If you look at the times and the heats, with the exception of the pitfalls at the start, which all drivers suffer from in their "first" KZ starting grid experience, I would say that he did well. Too bad we didn’t use the dry tires on the Sunday, as we would have seen the ‘real’ Nyck in action. It’s a shame that, without taking away credit from those who won, the pre-final and final races were two 'fake' races given the impact that the choice of tires had on the race. It must be said that the event organisers got it wrong this time."
LANCE STROLL - KF3
First race in Europe for the Canadian driver. In the first heats he finishes 6th, 7th and 8th. Then the bad luck sets in: in one heat a contact puts him back to last place and the slow regime penalises him for all 15 laps of the race, preventing him from making any sort of comeback. In another heat, once again an incident puts him down the pack and he fails to qualify. In the repechage ("bumper-car" race) he makes his way up to 7th place, but then another contact pushes him back to 18th place.

"Good. He did what he had to. This was his first race in Europe and it was obvious that nerves would play their part. We specifically wanted to start with the Winter which is a single race and would not affect his championship results. Now he understands how things work over here. Too bad he had that bad heat: the slow regime was OK, but it lasted the entire race. Wouldn’t it have been better to stop the heat and start again? ".

THE FRAME CHANGES COLOUR ...
The Winter Cup was the perfect occasion. In the first race of the season, Chiesa Corse decided to introduce their brand new coloured frame. No longer the characteristic bright blue used last season, but a wonderful silver grey color that changes depending on the angle from which you look at it: it appears darker in some moments and like a mirror in others. A restyling of the frames mounted on the Zanardi karts that Dino Chiesa, owner of the Italian factory explains: "The change was decided in order to test the reactions of the customers before the new homologation. We wanted to get some sort of indication on which direction to take in the future .... "
