OLI NORRIS ALL SET FOR FORMULA KART STARS OPENER IN CAMBRIDGE

Oli Norris will begin the first of two national karting series next weekend when he competes in the the opening rounds of the Formula Kart Stars Championship at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire.

The Glastonbury based 15 year-old will be driving in the Rotax Junior Max class for the RL Racing Department team. In testing he has already shown pace that could take him to the 2012 title. Despite suffering some bad luck and frustrating results during pre-season club events, Oli is now confident that both he and the team are where they need to be in time for the Easter bank holiday.

“We tested after the last club meeting and found a few things that were wrong and gained a good chunk of lap time because of it,” explains Oli. “I think we're well prepared now and everything is ready. My hope is that everything goes well in the first two or three rounds and I can get some good results in the bag,” he adds.”

Oli has been working hard to get ready for what he knows will be a long and tough season. This weekend starts the first of two main UK championships and is backed by Formula One Management, the company owned by Bernie Ecclestone. It is also supported by former FKS champion Lewis Hamilton.

He knows he will need to be right on the pace to get the best results from each of the six double-headers to be in with a chance of lifting the FKS crown. The series takes in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland over the next six months where he will be racing against some of the best drivers in the UK.

“I'm heading into the first round feeling confident,” he says. “I'm going out there with the kit to score podium results and challenge for a race win. I've been working really hard with the team on my own performance on track and they've been really supportive.”

“I'm heading into this year with more knowledge of just what a Junior Rotax engine and kart can do, so I'm much better prepared than I was this time last year,” he adds.

Each race weekend will feature two rounds of the series, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. On each day there will be timed qualifying, two heats and a final. This means that every weekend Oli will have double the chance to step onto the podium and double the track time and competition.

“There's lots more track time, which is good!” He smiles. “They are pressured weekends though as they’re very busy. It does mean that you can keep improving and finding time right the way through to the end of Sunday. And if we do have a bad day on Saturday, everything starts afresh the next day.”

“The FKS series is all about staying consistent and scoring as many points each weekend. So that's exactly what I'm aiming to do,” he adds.
