Il lungo ed impegnativo weekend della Winter Cup di Lonato, è terminato con una vittoria sfumata a pochi chilometri dalla bandiera a scacchi.
Nel fine settimana che ha visto ART Grand Prix esordire ufficialmente nel karting, nella categoria più prestigiosa – la KZ2 - l’inglese Ben Hanley ha disputato una finale tutta da leader, prendendo il comando nel corso del secondo giro davanti a Thonon e Dreezen.
Il pilota del “Factory Team” di ART Grand Prix a partire dal settimo giro ha iniziato ad accusare un problema meccanico che ha determinato un calo di poenza. Hanley ha
stretto i denti mantenendo la seconda posizione, poi a due giri dal termine della
corsa è stato costretto al ritiro.
L’amarezza per una vittoria che sul campo sarebbe stata meritata, è stata comunque mitigata dalla consapevolezza del buon lavoro effettuato nei mesi invernali. Alla sua prima uscita in un evento internazionale, ART Grand Prix è stata tra i protagonisti assoluti, raccogliendo riscontri estremamente positivi anche nella altre categorie in cui è stata presente.
In particolare, è stato al di sopra delle aspettative il potenziale fatto vedere dai nostri piloti in KF3, considerando che per tutti si trattava dell’esordio assoluto nella categoria e fuori dai rispettivi confini nazionali. Sena Sakaguchi ha visto svanire le possibilità di ottenere un risultati di spicco a causa di un contatto, che gli ha causato la frattura del radio dell’avambraccio destro. Lo sfortunato pilota giapponese è stato costretto a disertare le gare finali e sarà obbligato a tre settimane di riposo.
Takuya Okada, sempre molto veloce e costantemente nelle prime posizioni nelle
manche di qualificazione, ha pagato una penalità dovuta ad una piccola ma cruciale
sbavatura (un sorpasso oltre la “red line” nel giro di formazione), che è stato punito
dai Commissari con la cancellazione della vittoria. Yifan Xia ha iniziato il suo
apprendistato e per il giovanissimo pilota di Shanghai la Winter Cup ha rappresentato il debutto nel kart internazionale dopo un solo anno di gare. Yifan ha raccolto riscontri positivi sessione dopo sessione, migliorando progressivamente le sue performance.
Hanno raccolto meno di quanto avrebbero meritato anche i piloti che ART Grand Prix ha schierato al via nella categoria KF2. Sia Charles Leclerc che Bern Barnicoat hanno confermato in pista un potenziale molto elevato. In particolare, il pilota francese ha visto ridimensionarsi le sue ambizioni a causa di due incidenti. Sia in pre-finale che in finale Leclerc è stato costretto a riprendere la gara dalle posizioni di coda, ma in termini di potenziale velocistico ha comunque confermato con i rilievi cronometrici di valore assoluto di poter essere tra i protagonisti di spicco nel proseguimento della stagione. Anche Barnicoat, pur non risultando nella top ten della finale di domenica pomeriggio, è stato sempre nelle prime posizioni nei tempi sul giro, dalle qualifiche alle manche, alle pre-finali: non mancheranno sicuramente al pilota della Red Steps Foundation le occasioni per concretizzare il suo potenziale.
ART Grand Prix, pur con qualche rammarico, ha concluso la Winter Cup di Lonato con la certezza di aver lavorato nella giusta direzione. Una conferma arrivata dai riscontri raccolti non solo dal Factory Team, ma anche dalle squadre ufficiali di Francia e Finlandia. E’ mancata la conferma di un piazzamento sul podio, ma sia dal fronte telaistico che da quello dei motori, sono arrivate conferme molto importanti.

“Alla vigilia della Winter Cup il mio obiettivo era quello di essere nella top 5. Le
aspettative sono poi salite nel corso del weekend, quando ho toccato con mano il
lavoro fantastico fatto dalla squadra sia sul fronte tecnico che organizzativo in tutte le categorie dove siamo scesi in pista, dalla KF2 alla KF3, alla KZ. Nonostante per ART Grand Prix fosse la prima gara internazionale in assoluto, sono stato molto
contento delle nostre performance sin dalle prime prove, prestazioni mantenute anche in qualifica e nella pre-finale. In finale, dopo essere scattato dalla seconda posizione, ho preso il comando nel corso del secondo giro e sono rimasto saldamente in testa fino a quando un problema meccanico non mi ha progressivamente rallentato fino allo stop definitivo a due giri dal termine. Dopo un weekend nel quale siamo stati grandi protagonisti, non vedo l’ora che arrivi il prossimo appuntamento: sono convinto che continueremo a lavorare emigliorare, perseguendo l’obiettivo di ottenere la nostra prima vittoria al più presto!”

ART Grand Prix rate la victoire d'un souffle dans la Winter Cup à Lonato
Le premier long week-end de course de la saison, à Lonato à l'occasion de la
Winter Cup, s'est terminé par une victoire qui file entre les doigts d'ART Grand Prix
alors que la marque faisait ses débuts officiels dans la catégorie. Dans la catégorie
la plus prestigieuse, la KZ2, Ben Hanley a mené la plus grande partie de la finale
après avoir pris le commandement au deuxième tour devant Thonon et Dreezen.
Par la suite, le pilote de l'équipe d'usine ART Grand Prix a malheureusement souffert d'un problème mécanique qui a peu à peu fait perdre de la puissance à son moteur. Ben Hanley s'est battu bec et ongles pour conserver la 2ème place mais a dû abandonner à deux tours de l'arrivée. La perte d'une victoire qui lui tendait les bras laisse un goût amer à l'équipe mais il est contrebalancé par la confirmation de son potentiel qui est le fruit de l'excellent travail abattu par chacun durant l'hiver.
Lors de sa première course internationale, ART Grand Prix a signé une performance majuscule en se mêlant instantanément au peloton de tête. En outre, elle a obtenu de bons résultats dans d'autres catégories.
Le tableau de chasse des pilotes KF3 est exceptionnel car ils faisaient tous leurs débuts, qui plus est loin de leurs bases. Sena Sakaguchi a perdu toutes ses chances de se battre pour une place dans les dix premiers à cause d'un contact; il souffrait également d'une fracture au bras droit, au niveau du radius. Le pilote japonais a dû se déclarer forfait pour la fin de l'événement et devra observer un repos de trois semaines.
Takuya Okada a maintenu un excellent rythme de course et s'est frayé un chemin vers les avant-postes pendant toutes les manches. Puis, une petite mais fatale erreur (il a franchi la ligne rouge pendant le tour de formation) lui a coûté la victoire.
Yifan Xia a débuté son apprentissage du karting international après une saison de compétition nationale. Le pilote basé à Shanghai a livré une performance intéressante qu'il a améliorée au fur et à mesure du meeting.
Les pilotes ART Grand Prix engagés en KF2 n'ont pas obtenu les résultats qu'ils méritaient. Charles Leclerc et Ben Barnicoat ont tous deux confirmé leur grand
potentiel. Le Français a été ralenti par deux incidents et a dû remonter depuis l'arrière du peloton à la fois en pré-finale et en finale. Sa rapidité démontre qu'il est un pilote de grand talent, souligné par le fait qu'il a enregistré des temps au tour similaires à ceux des leaders. Malgré une arrivée en dehors du top 10 dans la finale, Barnicoat a constamment inscrit son nom dans le haut des feuilles de temps en
essais, en qualification et dans les manches qui précèdent la finale. Le pilote soutenu par Red Steps Foundation aura sans aucun doute l'opportunité d'exprimer son plein potentiel dans un avenir proche.
Bien qu'ayant essuyé quelques revers, ART Grand Prix a conclu la Winter Cup 2012 avec la certitude d'avoir travaillé dans la bonne direction. En parallèle à l'équipe d'usine, la même conclusion s'applique aux équipes officielles de France et de Finlande. Un podium mérité a été manqué de peu mais le châssis et les moteurs ont donné de très bonnes sensations techniques.

En m'alignant dans la Winter Cup avec ART Grand Prix, j'avais pour objectif d'être dans les 5 premiers. Pendant les essais, ART a fait un travail fantastique en mettant
tout en place avec le plus grand professionnalisme et en extrayant tout le potentiel de ses karts des catégories KF3, KF2 et KZ. Mes attentes étaient donc élevées même s'il ne faut pas perdre de vue qu'il ne s'agissait que de la première course de l'équipe. Je suis ravi de la manière avec laquelle ART s'est attaquée à la Winter Cup. Notre rythme des essais, des qualifications et des courses était très bon. En partant depuis la deuxième place, j'ai pris la tête jusqu'à la mi-course mais à partir de cet instant je me suis calé à la 2ème place jusqu'à deux tours de l'arrivée, puis j'ai abandonné sur casse mécanique. J'ai hâte de disputer la prochaine course car je sais que nous continuerons d'apprendre et de nous améliorer dans notre quête pour une première victoire.

ART Grand Prix close to victory at the Winter Cup in Lonato
A long weekend at the Winter Cup in Lonato ended with a win that vanished with
just a few kilometers to go for ART Grand Prix as the brand made its first official
race outing. In the most prestigious class - KZ2 - British star Ben Hanley led for much part of the final as he cruised to the top on lap 2 in front of Thonon and Dreezen. The ART Grand Prix Factory Team driver then suffered from a developing mechanical issue which made his engine lose power. Hanley fought hard and held
onto second place before being forced to retire with two to go.
The loss of a possible win felt bitter for the team although it was balanced by the
confirmation of the great job done during the winter. At their first international race, ART Grand Prix provided a major performance and effectively joined the front
runners pack. In addition to that, good results also came from the other classes.
The results scored by the team's KF3 racers proved outstanding, especially because they were all at debut and far away from home. Sena Sakaguchi lost all his chances to fight for a top-end result due to a contact and also suffered from a fracture to his right radius. The Japanese racer had to withdraw from the rest of the event and will be forced to a three-week period of rest.
Takuya Okada kept running at an high pace and made his way to the front end of the field during all the heats. Then, a small but crucial mystake (he crossed the "red
line" during the formation lap) cost him a win. Yifan Xia started his learning time in
international kart racing after one season at national levels. The Shanghai-based
youngster provided the team with a positive run, improving his performance as the
event progressed.
The ART Grand Prix drivers fielded in KF2 definitely achieved less than they deserved. Both Charles Leclerc and Ben Barnicoat confirmed their extremely high potential. The French racer was slowed down by two incidents and had to fight back from the rear in both the pre-final and the final races. His pace proved to be topnotch though, as he matched the times set by the class leaders. Despite ending up outside the top-10 in the final, Barnicoat kept his name at the front end of the charts in the practice, qualifying and pre-final heats. The Red Steps Foundation racer will definitely have some great chances to express his full potential in the upcoming future.
Despite having suffered a couple of blows, ART Grand Prix ended up the 2012 Winter Cup at Lonato aware of having worked in the right direction so far. Alongside the Factory Team, the same outlook was confirmed by the official teams of France and Finland. A well-deserved podium finish was missed but a great feedback came from both the chassis and the engines compartments.

“Going into the winter cup with ART Grand Prix kart I was aiming to be in the top 5, during our testing the ART team did a fantastic job in getting everything professionally organised and extracting all the potential from the ART kart from the
KF3 KF2 and KZ. So my hopes were high even though it was the first race for the
team. I was delighted with how the ART team coped with the winter cup and our pace during testing, qualification and races was very good. From starting P2 in the final I took the lead until the halfway point and from then remained in second place until 2 laps from the end, when I retired with a mechanical failure. I'm looking forward to the next race already as I know we will keep learning and improving in search of our first win”.
