Mach1 Motorsport’s split satisfaction - Geteilte Freude für Mach1 Motorsport
Due to technical difficulties the Mach1 Motorsport team missed a top placement
at the fourth race of the German Kart championship in Oschersleben. In the end,
reaching the 10th rank during the finals meant a conciliatory close though.
Technische Querelen kosteten das Mach1 Motorsport Team beim vierten Rennen derDeutschen Kart Meisterschaft in Oschersleben eine Top-Platzierung. Letztlich gab es mit Rang zehn im Finale aber noch einen versöhnlichen Abschluss.
John Norris from Ireland set the pace of the only German chassis manufacturer’s camp at the Mageburger Boerde. After great free practices he backed his performance up during qualifying by reaching the pole position in the German Kart championship’s top-class field. It was not an easy task for the Irishman though. During warm-up in the morning, his engine had been damaged. “Luckily we
found the error and were able to register a new engine at the last minute”, revealed team leader Martin Hetschel. Starting from the front row respectively, John was able to establish himself in front field during the Heats and by reaching second and third position secured the overall third starting position for the sprint. Then, disaster took its course. Already during the warm-up lap, John’s ignition plug stopped working and he had to end the race before it had even started. Fuelled by a great deal of anger, he started an enthralling catch-up race during the finals. After only a few laps, John was headed for the top ten. But again, technology had the last word on the matter. A bracket of his cooling unit broke, causing the engine temperature to rise alarmingly. He came in 21st in the end. Despite this flop, John is still on the remarkable 6th position of the championship ranking.
Danish duo Martin Mortensen and Jannick Flygenring pulled the chestnuts out of the fire. It was their first race on the 1.018m high speed track and both started off very fast. After the Heats, Mortensen was on the 18th starting position, Flygenring followed on the 21st. Their start at Sunday morning’s sprint was rather retained though. Mortensen was only able to gain one position during the 13 laps, coming in 17th, Flygenring finished 21st again. During finals, the tide turned. Both vastly increased their performances and worked their ways up to the top ten. At the middle of the race, they were on 7th and 8th position. In the end both of them lost some ground though and came in 10th and 12th respectively.
Team leader Martin Hetschel was glad about the limitation of damage during the finals. “We definitely would have been able to drive at the forefront with John, but Martin and Jannick were able to satisfy once again as well. Theirperformances during the finals are worth cherishing. Both reached great times and collected well deserved championship points.”
The group’s next race will already take place next weekend. They will start at the ADAC Kart Masters’ finale in Kerpen. At the Erftland, Mach1 Kart driver Luca Walter even has chances of winning the IAME X30 junior class title.

John Norris aus Irland bestimmte auch in der Magdeburger Börde das Tempo im Lager des einzigen deutschen Chassisherstellers. Nach tollen freien Trainings untermauerte er im Zeittraining seine Performance mit der Pole-Position im hochkarätigen Feld der Deutschen Kart Meisterschaft. Dabei hatte der Ire kein einfaches Spiel. Im Warm-Up am Morgen hatte sein Rennmotor Schaden genommen. „Zum Glück haben wir den Fehler gefunden und konnten noch in der letzten Minute einen neuen Motor registrieren“, verriet Teamchef Martin Hetschel. Jeweils aus der ersten Startreihe konnte John sich auch in den Vorläufen im Spitzenpulk etablieren und sicherte sich mit Rang zwei und drei, Gesamtposition drei für den Sprint. Doch in diesem nahm das Unheil seinen Lauf. Noch in der Einführungsrunde quitterte Johns Zündkerze seinen Dienst und er musste das Rennen vor dem Start beenden. Mit einer gehörigen Portion Wut im Bauch startete er dann im Finale eine packende Aufholjagd. Nach nur wenigen Runden lag John auf Top-Ten Kurs. Aber auch diesmal sollte die Technik das letzte Wort haben. Eine Halterung seines Kühlers war gebrochen, wodurch die Motortemperatur gefährlich anstieg. Im Ziel stand am Ende nur Gesamtposition 21 zu Buche. Trotz
der Nullnummer ist John in der Meisterschaftswertung weiterhin beachtlicher Sechster.
Die Kohlen aus dem Feuer holte das dänische Duo Martin Mortensen und Jannick Flygenring. Beide fuhren ihr erstes Rennen auf dem 1.018 Meter langen Hochgeschwindigkeitskurs und waren auf Anhieb sehr schnell unterwegs. Nach den Heats rangierte Mortensen auf Startplatz 18 und Flygenring folgte auf 21. Einen verhaltenen Start legten sie jedoch im Sprint am Sonntagmorgen hin. Mortensen
verbesserte sich in den 13 Runden nur um eine Position auf Rang 17, Flygenring war erneut 21. Im Finale sollte sich das Blatt aber wenden. Beide drehten gehörig auf und arbeiteten sich bis in die Top-Ten vor. Zu Rennmitte rangierten sie auf den Plätzen sieben und acht. Letztlich mussten jedoch beide Federn lassen und erreichten als Zehnte bzw. Zwölfte das Ziel.
Teamchef Martin Hetschel war froh über die Schadensbegrenzung im Finale. „Mit John hätten wir sicherlich ganz vorne mit fahren können, aber auch Martin und Jannick konnten erneut überzeugen. Ihre Vorstellung im Finale war aller Ehren wert. Beide fuhren schnelle Zeiten und haben verdient Meisterschaftspunkte gesammelt.“
Schon am kommenden Wochenende geht es für die Truppe weiter. Dann startet das Team beim Finale des ADAC Kart Masters in Kerpen. Mit Luca Walter hat ein Mach1-Kart Pilot im Erftland sogar Titelchancen in der IAME X30 Junioren Klasse.
