For its second event of the 2011 season, the CIK-FIA ‘U18’ World Championship (under 18) headed on down to the Essay circuit, located in Normandy. Notwithstanding cold weather interspersed with some rain, the qualifying sessions and the first qualifying rounds held this Saturday rather confirmed the hierarchy built up in Italy, during the first meeting.
As such the Brit Matthew Graham (Zanardi), the Finn Pyry Ovaska (Maranello) and the Italian Antonio Giovinazzi (PCR) confirmed their strength for top speed as they constantly battled it out up front during their different qualifying rounds. Amongst the major surprises of the day we noted a best qualifying time and winner of one round, namely the Dutchman Dave Blom (Intrepid), not forgetting the Finn Tomi Katajamäki (Maranello) as also the Italian Michelle Beccaria (Top Kart), who were also fastest in their respective heats. Last but not least the Frenchman Leo Roussel (Sodi) proved his ambitions in front of a home crowd with a second best time in the qualifying sessions, followed by two victories in the qualifying heats. The last three heats will be held on Sunday morning allowing the 34 finalists to be determined. The latter will then compete in two Pre-Finals (the second one with an inverted starting grid) followed by the Final at the end of the day.
During this last weekend of August the Essay circuit also welcomes the CIK-FIA Academy trophy. The best timed lap by the Frenchman Esteban Ocon was later in the afternoon excluded from the meeting for technical irregularities. This allowed the Spaniard Mikel Azcona to convert his second time in the qualifying sessions (he had in fact produced the best time in his series during a partially wet track) to pole position for the first Race. The Monegasque Charles Leclerc, who had already created an impression with his two victories during the qualifying sessions, is next to him on the front row. The second row of the grid also saw two winners of the qualifying heats: the Brit Benjamin Barnicoat and the Albanian Aleksander Ndrio. Present leader in the championship, the Frenchman Dorian Boccolacci did not actually win any rounds, but he was constantly amongst the fastest runners. The top-10 at the end of the qualifying rounds was made up out of the Swede William Sward, the Austrian Florian Janits, the Ukrainian Oleksandr Tkachenko, the Spaniard Diego Rodriguez and the Rumanian Ioan Stefan. In this category where all drivers compete with the same material, two Races offering up the same number of points is scheduled for this Sunday afternoon.

Débuts en fanfare en Normandie
Pour sa deuxième épreuve de la saison 2011, le Championnat du Monde M18 (- de 18 ans) de la CIK-FIA a rejoint le circuit d’Essay, en Normandie. Malgré une météo froide et quelques gouttes de pluie, les essais chronométrés et les premières manches qualificatives disputées ce samedi ont permis de confirmer une hiérarchie déjà entrevue en Italie, lors du premier rendez-vous. Ainsi, le Britannique Matthew Graham (Zanardi), le Finlandais Pyry Ovaska (Maranello) ou l’Italien Antonio Giovinazzi (PCR) ont confirmé leur pointe de vitesse en se battant constamment aux avant-postes lors de leurs différentes manches qualificatives. Parmi les bonnes surprises du jour, on pointait le Néerlandais Dave Blom (Intrepid), auteur du meilleur temps des essais qualificatifs et vainqueur d’une manche, mais aussi le Finlandais Tomi Katajamäki (Maranello) et l’Italien Michelle Beccaria (Top Kart), eux aussi les plus rapides lors d’une de ces confrontations. Enfin, le Français Leo Roussel (Sodi) affichait ses ambitions face à son public avec un deuxième chrono lors des essais qualificatifs puis deux victoires. Les trois dernières manches qualificatives se dérouleront ce dimanche matin et elles permettront de déterminer définitivement les 34 finalistes, lesquels disputeront deux Préfinales (la seconde avec une grille de départ inversée) puis la grande Finale en fin de journée.
En ce dernier week-end du mois d’août, le circuit d’Essay accueille aussi le Trophée Académie de la CIK-FIA. Meilleur temps des essais chronométrés, le Français Esteban Ocon était exclu du meeting dans l’après-midi pour irrégularité technique. C’est dès lors l’Espagnol Mikel Azcona qui en profitait pour convertir sa deuxième place des essais (il avait en fait réalisé le meilleur temps de sa série lors d’une séance disputée sur une piste partiellement humide) en pole position pour la première Course. Ayant lui aussi impressionné avec deux victoires dans les manches qualificatives, le Monégasque Charles Leclerc s’élancera à ses côtés sur la première ligne. La deuxième ligne accueillera elle aussi deux vainqueurs d’une manche : le Britannique Benjamin Barnicoat et l’Albanais Aleksander Ndrio. Actuellement leader du championnat, le Français Dorian Boccolacci n’a certes pas remporté de manche, mais il était constamment parmi les plus rapides et il pointe au 5e rang du classement intermédiaire. Le top 10 était complété par le Suédois William Sward, l’Autrichien Florian Janits, l’Ukrainien Oleksandr Tkachenko, l’Espagnol Diego Rodriguez et le Roumain Ioan Stefan. Pour cette catégorie où tous les pilotes disposent du même matériel, deux Courses attribuant le même nombre de points sont programmées ce dimanche après-midi.
