A "SPECIAL" WEEKEND
ZUERA, SPAIN HOSTS THE SECOND ROUND OF THE CIK-FIA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE KF1 CATEGORY. THE SAME TRACK ALSO HOSTS THE KF3 EUROPEAN. CHIESA CORSE IS PRESENT WITH TWO DRIVERS.
NYCK DE VRIES – KF1
4 finali molto diverse con la sola costante del miglior giro in pista per il pilota olandese. Nella prima finale De Vries parte dalla pole e vince, alla grande, per distacco. Nella Finale 2 De Vries rimane incollato all’asfalto con i pneumatici poiché non riesce a raggiungere con le braccia le gomme posteriori (così da muovere il kart e impedire che si attacchi). Così, nell’immobilismo generale, interviene il suo meccanico che lo aiuta a ripartire dai box. Nyck è staccato due curve dal gruppo, ma fa una gara stupenda recuperando tutti i piloti e arrivando, a poche curve dalla fine, a essere anche 2°, salvo poi chiudere al 4° posto. Ma è tutto vano: a fine gara viene infatti squalificato perché non è consentito l’intervento dei meccanici in pista. In finale 3 il problema potrebbe ripresentarsi, quindi De Vries è costretto a salire in corsa sul kart: ma questo non parte e, aiutato dai commissari di gara, raggiunge i box. Riparte, ma questa volta il distacco dall’ultimo pilota del gruppo è di mezza pista: l’olandese non si scompone e disputa un'altra gara da applausi, chiudendo 7°. In finale 4 un contatto lo costringe a ricominciare (nuovamente) dal fondo della griglia. E siccome non c’è due senza tre, la rimonta è servita: 3° posto e testa della classifica generale preservata.

“La supremazia in pista è stata chiara: poteva essere una Wackersdorf 2 (in Germania De Vries ha vinto 4 finali su 4, ndr) ma, visto che sono successe cose strane, forse qualcuno ha pensato che il Mondiale avrebbe perso d’interesse”
LANCE STROLL – KF3
Il pilotino (ha 12 anni!!!) canadese corre un grande Europeo. Nelle qualifiche è subito 10° e nelle manche si conferma velocissimo raccogliendo un 7° (con miglior giro in pista), un 3° e un 5° posto. Peccato che nella quarta manche sia costretto a lasciare, andando ad alzare il numero delle penalità. In prefinale parte quindi 20°, ma con una gara maiuscola condita anche dal miglior tempo in pista, riesce a raggiungere il 9° posto. In finale parte come uno dei piloti da tenere d’occhio per il titolo, ma qualche contatto di troppo lo penalizza e, alla fine, chiude 19° con il 3° tempo assoluto in pista.

“Come tutti i piloti patisce la dura legge della prima curva delle gare della KF3 che, ormai, decide sempre il risultato. Peccato, ma era da top 5. Ma, comunque, sta correndo una grande stagione al di sopra delle aspettative”

NYCK DE VRIES – KF1
The Dutch driver raced 4 very different finals with the sole constant variable of best track run. In the first, De Vries started from pole and won big time, gapping from the others. In Final 2 De Vries’ tyres kept him glued to the pavement, unable to reach the back slicks with his arms (to move the kart and prevent it from sticking). His mechanic intervened in this general state of stillness and helped him to get going again from the pit-box. Nyck was two bends behind the group, but did an amazing race, putting himself back on par with all drivers and getting so far as 2nd place a few bends from the end and finished 4th. Yet, it was all in vain: at the end of the race he was disqualified because the mechanics are not allowed to intervene on the track. In final 3, for fear of facing the same problem, De Vries was forced to do a running start, but the kart wouldn’t start and, with the help of race commissioners, it was taken to the pit-box. Here it started back up, but this time there was a half-track gap from the last pilot of the group: Yet, the Dutch driver kept his cool and did another applause-winning race, closing 7th. In final 4 a contact forced him to start (again) from the back rows. But since good things come in three’s, he was quick to recover: 3rd place and the lead in the general classifications intact.

“Our supremacy on the track was clear: it could have been another Wackersdorf (in Germany De Vries won 4 finals out of 4, n.a.) but, since weird things have happened, perhaps some people thought the World championship would stop being interesting.”
LANCE STROLL – KF3
The little Canadian driver (he’s 12 years old!!!) raced great in the European championship. In the qualifications he was immediately 10th and in the heats he proved to be very fast, taking away 7th (with best track run), 3rd and 5th place. Too bad that in the fourth heat he was forced to give up, increasing his number of penalties. In prefinal he thus started 20th, but with a capital R race peppered with best track time he managed to reach 9th place. In the final, he started off like one of those drivers who should be kept in check for the title, but was then penalized by one contacts too many and in the end he closed 19th with 3rd absolute best track time.

“Like all drivers, he clashed with the hard law of the first bend that applies to KF3 races, which always determines the end result. A pity, because his was a top 5 performance. In any case, he’s having a great season above all expectations.”
