Matthew Graham “U18” World Championship Leader
Fast all weekend long, the Briton Matthew Graham won an exciting final in the first round of the “U18” World Championship held on the Italian track of Ortona. In the Academy Trophy, Albany’s Aleksander Ndrio and France’s Dorian Boccolacci shared the wins in the two races of the day.
The first of the three “U18” (under 18 years old) World Championship events, which was held this weekend at Ortona, offered a great show to the spectators present. Held over 19 laps, the final was exciting to watch and action-packed. The initial leader after his start from the first row, Michele Beccaria (Top Kart) led a group of especially lively Drivers. The Italian’s lead was finally taken by his compatriot Antonio Giovinazzi (PCR), who managed to fly away from his opponents… before being betrayed by his chain. This was to the advantage of the poleman, Matthew Graham (Zanardi), who was strongly recovering from 5th place after a poor start and a minor excursion off the track further to a contact with another Driver. This time, nothing could prevent the Briton, who had already achieved the fastest qualifying practice time, from landing his maiden world victory.
“It was an incredible race”, he explained. “Lap after lap I felt my kart was faster and faster, and I never gave up. It is awesome to achieve a win in this closely-fought Championship. All the engines are identical and there is very intense fighting on the track.”
Behind the British Driver, the competition remained very hard-fought and arose the enthusiasm of the spectators gathered in the grandstands. Starting from the first row the Italian “Speedy” (alias Antonio Fuoco) collided with the Dane Martin Mortensen (Mach 1). In the meantime, Italy’s Federico Savona (Top Kart) secured the second step of the podium by finishing ahead of the Finn Pyry Ovaska (Maranello). Starting from 14th place, Britain’s Henry Easthope (Sodi) achieved the fastest lap time of the race and ended up at the foot of the podium after he got the better of the Dane Jannick Flygenring (Mach 1). One of the strong men of the weekend, Simone Favaro (Parolin), paid dearly a retirement from one of the two prefinals. Only 18th on the grid, the Italian however managed to limit the damage by scoring the points of 6th place ahead of Germany’s Lucas Speck (Mach 1), the Dutchman Dave Blom (Intrepid) and the Finns Tomi Katajmäki and Niclas Nylund (both in Maranello karts). This exciting race makes us want to know what comes next and we look forward to watching the second round at the end of August on the French circuit of Essay.
Academy Trophy: Rodriguez unlucky, Boccolacci leader
Held as a support to the CIK-FIA “U18” World Championship, the action-packed Academy Trophy had many emotions in store in Ortona’s heat wave. Leaders further to the qualifying heats, the Russian Vsevolod Gagen and the representative of the FIA Women in Motor Sport Commission, France’s Lucile Cypriano, were unable to confirm their form in the two races scheduled on Sunday afternoon. Both times it was Diego Rodriguez who first crossed the finish line. But the Spaniard could not make it to the highest step of the podium. A three-second penalty in the first race relegated him to the runner-up position and he was disqualified from the second race as he did not meet the regulatory minimum weight. And then we saw a historical event in the first race as it was won by Aleksander Ndrio, the first licence-holder from Albany to enter an international Karting competition. Aleksander thus proved the justification of this international competition created by the CIK-FIA with the support of Parolin (which supplies the chassis and engines free of charge), as in particular it enables Drivers from nations seldom represented in Karting to compete on equal terms with youngsters from countries where this form of sport is well developed.
On the podium of this first race, Ndrio was joined by the poor Diego Rodriguez and the Monaco competitor Charles Leclerc. France’s Esteban Ocon and Britain’s Benjamin Barnicoat confirmed their reputation as hopefuls in their countries by getting into the Top 5 ahead of the second Frenchman, Dorian Boccolacci, the Finn Aatu Moilanen, the Spaniard Mikel Azcona, the Greek Filippos Kalesis and the Swiss Randy Berglas. After a bad start and a spin, Lucile Cypriano could only manage to finish 13th despite achieving the fastest lap time in the race, slightly ahead of Vsevolod Gagen.
The second race was also full of action. After the disqualification of Rodriguez, victory went to the young Frenchman Boccolacci, who had successfully pulled away from a group where there was no lack of overtaking. He was joined on the podium by Filippos Kalesis and Charles Leclerc while Esteban Ocon and Benjamin Barnicoat confirmed the 4th and 5th places they had obtained in the first race. It was also worth noting the presence in the Top 10 of Finland’s Juho Valtanen and Aatu Moilanen, of the Norwegian Frederik Schandorff and of the Ukrainian Oleksander Tkachenko, author of the fastest lap time in the race. And what about the winner of the first race, Aleksander Ndrio? A collision at the start jeopardised all his chances right from beginning, and it was also the case of Lucile Cypriano, who was involved in heavy bumping in a closely-fought opening lap.
Thanks to the success he achieved in the second race, Dorian Boccolacci will arrive as provisional Championship leader at the next event, scheduled at the end of August at Essay. But he is closely followed by Charles Leclerc, Fillipos Kalesis, Esteban Ocon and Benjamin Barnicoat.

Matthew Graham en tête du Mondial « M18 »
Rapide durant tout le week-end, le Britannique Matthew Graham a remporté une finale passionnante lors de la première épreuve du Championnat du Monde M18, disputée sur la piste italienne d’Ortona. Dans le Trophée Académie, l’Albanais Aleksander Ndrio et le Français Dorian Boccolacci se sont partagé les victoires lors des deux courses du jour.
La première des trois épreuves du Championnat du Monde « M18 » (moins de 18 ans) qui s’est déroulée ce week-end à Ortona a réservé aux spectateurs présents du très grand spectacle. Disputée sur 19 tours, la Finale fut passionnante à suivre, avec de multiples rebondissements. Prenant la tête alors qu’il s’élançait de la première ligne, Michele Beccaria (Top Kart) menait un groupe de 5 Pilotes particulièrement animé. Finalement, l’Italien se faisait déloger de la tête de course par son compatriote Antonio Giovinazzi (PCR), lequel parvenait à fausser compagnie à ses camarades… avant d’être trahi par sa chaîne de transmission. Tout profit pour le poleman, Matthew Graham (Zanardi), qui revenait en force de la 5e position après un départ raté et une petite excursion hors de la piste suite à un contact avec l’un de ses adversaires. Cette fois, plus rien ne pouvait empêcher le Britannique, déjà le plus rapide lors des essais qualificatifs, de remporter sa première victoire mondiale.
« Ce fut une course incroyable », expliquait-il. « Au fil des tours, je sentais mon kart de plus en plus rapide et je n’ai jamais baissé les bras. C’est super de gagner dans ce Championnat très serré. Tous les moteurs sont identiques et la bagarre en piste est très intense. »
Dans le sillage du Britannique, les débats restaient plus que vifs, suscitant l’enthousiasme des spectateurs massés dans les tribunes. Parti depuis la première ligne, l’Italien « Speedy » (alias Antonio Fuoco) s’accrochait avec le Danois Martin Mortensen (Mach 1). Pendant ce temps-là, l’Italien Federico Savona (Top Kart) s’assurait de la deuxième marche du podium en devançant le Finlandais Pyry Ovaska (Maranello). Parti depuis la 14e place, le Britannique Henry Easthope (Sodi) signait le meilleur tour en course et échouait au pied du podium après avoir pris le meilleur sur le Danois Jannick Flygenring (Mach 1). Parmi les hommes forts du week-end, Simone Favaro (Parolin) a payé cher un abandon lors de l’une des deux préfinales. Seulement 18e sur la grille, l’Italien a toutefois limité les dégâts en décrochant les points de la 6e place devant l’Allemand Lucas Speck (Mach 1), le Néerlandais Dave Blom (Intrepid) et les Finlandais Tomi Katajmäki et Niclas Nylund (tous deux sur Maranello). Cette course passionnante donne envie de connaître la suite et on a hâte de vivre la deuxième épreuve fin août, sur la piste française d’Essay.
Trophée Académie : Rodriguez malchanceux, Boccolacci en tête
Disputé en marge du Championnat du Monde « M18 », le Trophée Académie de la CIK-FIA n’a pas été avare en émotions et en rebondissements sous la canicule d’Ortona. En tête après les manches qualificatives, le Russe Vsevolod Gagen et la représentante de la Commission Femmes et Sport Automobile de la FIA, la Française Lucile Cypriano, n’ont pas pu confirmer lors des deux courses programmées dimanche après-midi. À deux reprises, c’est Diego Rodriguez qui a franchi en premier la ligne d’arrivée. Mais pas une seule fois l’Espagnol n’a pu monter sur la plus haute marche du podium. Une pénalité de trois secondes lors de la première course l’a relégué au 2e rang alors qu’il était déclassé de la deuxième course pour avoir été pesé sous le poids réglementaire. Dès lors, on assistait à un événement historique lors de la première course car le vainqueur était l’Albanais Aleksander Ndrio, premier représentant de son pays dans une épreuve internationale de Karting. Aleksander prouvait ainsi le bien-fondé de cette compétition internationale créée par la CIK-FIA avec le soutien de Parolin (qui fournit gratuitement les châssis et les moteurs) et qui permet notamment à des Pilotes issus de nations peu représentées en Karting d’affronter à armes égales leurs homologues des pays où la discipline occupe une place importante.
Sur le podium de cette première course, Ndrio était rejoint par le pauvre Diego Rodriguez et le Monégasque Charles Leclerc. Le Français Esteban Ocon et le Britannique Benjamin Barnicoat confirmaient leur statut d’espoir dans leur pays en rentrant dans le Top 5 devant le deuxième Français, Dorian Boccolacci, le Finlandais Aatu Moilanen, l’Espagnol Mikel Azcona, le Grec Filippos Kalesis et le Suisse Randy Berglas. Après un départ manqué et un tête-à-queue, Lucile Cypriano ne pouvait faire mieux qu’une 13e place malgré son meilleur tour en course, juste devant Vsevolod Gagen.
La deuxième course était elle aussi très animée. Après le déclassement de Rodriguez, la victoire revenait au jeune Français Dorian Boccolacci, lequel était parvenu à s’échapper d’un groupe où les dépassements n’ont pas manqué. Il était rejoint sur le podium par Filippos Kalesis et Charles Leclerc alors qu’Esteban Ocon et Benjamin Barnicoat confirmaient leurs 4e et 5e places de la première course. On notait encore la présence dans le Top 10 des Finlandais Juho Valtanen et Aatu Moilanen, du Norvégien Frederik Schandorff et de l’Ukrainien Oleksander Tkachenko, auteur du meilleur tour en course. Et le vainqueur de la première course, Aleksander Ndrio ? Un accrochage au départ a d’emblée compromis toutes ses chances, tout comme Lucile Cypriano, elle aussi impliquée dans une bousculade lors d’un premier tour très disputé.
Grâce à son succès lors de la deuxième course, Dorian Boccolacci arrivera en tête du classement provisoire du Championnat lors de la prochaine épreuve, fin août à Essay. Mais Charles Leclerc, Filippos Kalesis, Esteban Ocon et Benjamin Barnicoat sont dans son sillage.
