CHIESA CORSE: TWO YOUNG PODIUMS
THE THIRD ROUND OF THE WSK EURO SERIES WAS CONTENDED IN MURO LECCESE, ON THE LA CONCA TRACK. THREE CHIESA CORSE DRIVERS WERE AT THE RACES.
NYCK DE VRIES – KF1
Il pilota olandese è subito velocissimo con il 2° tempo nelle qualifiche e un doppio 1° posto nelle manche che anticipano Finale 1. Qui una partenza difficile gli fa perdere un po’ di posizioni, salvo poi recuperarle nel corso della gara fino a raggiungere un ottimo (ai fini delle classifica) 3° posto. La domenica, nella prima manche che anticipa Finale 2, De Vries è costretto a lasciare a causa di un incidente che danneggia il kart; nella manche successiva, però, recupera fino al 6° posto che gli vale l’8° posto in griglia. In finale, in pochi giri e a suon di sorpassi, recupera fino al 2° posto che poi conserva fino alla fine della gara. A una gara dal termine del campionato, è in testa alla classifica generale con 64 punti di vantaggio.

“Stavolta ci vuole il commento! Finalmente abbiamo trovato un avversario: Albon ha dimostrato che Nyck si può battere. È stato bravo. Peccato per la partenza di Finale 1 dove Nyck è sfilato 7° e da lì non è stato possibile andare a prendere il primo, non rischiando neanche il sorpasso per il 2° posto. Nella prima manche di domenica, nel tentativo di passare Lock per recuperare, Nyck ha sbagliato; ma nella seconda ha segnato il 2° miglior giro in gara e in Finale è risalito da 8° a 2° in 4 giri, non potendo però riprendere Albon che ha vinto meritatamente. Visto che ora Albon ha distanziato Nyck di due decimi, quelli che credono che abbiamo qualcosa di ‘strano’ sul kart, forse diranno la stessa cosa ad Albon…”.
GARY CARLTON – KZ1
Un weekend a due facce. Nella prima parte, complice qualche difficoltà nel trovare il giusto set up e qualche incidente, va tutto storto. Il pilota americano non conclude Finale 1 dopo manche della sfortunate. Nelle manche che anticipano Finale 2 le cose non migliorano e Carlton è costretto a partire 23° in griglia. Poi, in Finale, il lungo lavoro del weekend dà i suoi frutti e il pilota, senza incidenti e con qualche problema di carburazione verso la fine, chiude 15° (dopo essere stato anche 13°).
Il commento di Dino Chiesa
“Ha avuto dei problemi fino alla Finale 2, poi è andata meglio. Ci manca ancora un po’ tutto per sviluppare. Ma stiamo lavorando per arrivare al top”.
LANCE STROLL – KF3
Il pilotino canadese si adatta subito alla pista e nelle qualifiche è 11°, mentre nelle manche è 21° nonostante un 2°, un 3° e un 5° posto (ma in una è costretto a lasciare per incidente). In prefinale la rimonta è di quelle importanti e alla fine della gara è 7°. In finale Stroll completa la grande rimonta e chiude con un grandissimo 2° posto in finale.

“Dire che nelle manche ha avuto diversi contatti, è ormai banale: in questa categoria li hanno tutti. In prefinale, però, ha fortuna ad uscire bene dagli incidenti e lo stesso in finale dove parte benissimo. Il ragazzo è veloce e ha i numeri per vincere. Adesso gli manca solo un po’ di forza. Ma ricordo che ha ancora 12 anni e corre con altri ragazzi che hanno 15 anni. E un podio alla WSK Euro Series a questa età e alla terza gara importante che corre, direi che è più che soddisfacente”.

NYCK DE VRIES – KF1
The Dutch pilot showed immediately fast speeds, qualifying with 2nd best time and landing a double 1st place in the heats that preceded Final 1. Here a difficult start pushed him back a few positions, which he gained back throughout the race, finishing it with an excellent (in terms of overall ranking) 3rd place. On Sunday, De Vries was forced to withdraw from the first heat leading to Final 2, due to an accident that damaged his kart; but in the second heat he climbed back up to a 6th place at the finish line, which translated into 8th in the charts. In the Final, after a few laps and a load of passes, he gained ground all the way to 2nd place, which he held until the end. With one race left in the Championship, he’ s on top of the overall chart leading by 64 points.
Dino Chiesa’s comment
“This one calls for a comment! We’ve finally found a rival: Albon has proven that Nyck can be beat. He did well. Too bad for the start in Final 1 where Nyck dropped to 7th and wasn’t able to climb back up to first place and even avoided a pass to get to 2nd. In Sunday’s first heat, Nyck made a mistake in the attempt to to gain a lead over Lock; but then in the second heat he scored 2nd best lap time and in the Final he climbed from 8th to 2nd in just 4 laps even if he wasn’t able to reach Albon, whose victory was well-deserved. Since Albon now leads over Nyck by two tenths, I wonder if those who think there’s something ‘weird’ about our kart will start saying the same thing about him too…”.
GARY CARLTON – KZ1
A two-faced weekend. in the first half everything went wrong, due to some difficulties in finding the right set up and a couple of accidents. After unlucky heats, the America driver failed to finish Final 1. In the heats that preceded Final 2 things didn’t get any better and Carlton was forced to start 23rd at the line up. Then, in the Final, the weekend’s hard work finally paid off and the driver, avoiding accidents but running into a carburetion problem towards the end, finished 15th (after having gained 13th position during the race).
Dino Chiesa’s comment
“He had problems until Final 2, then things picked up. Everything still needs to be developed. But we’re working hard to get to the top”.
LANCE STROLL – KF3
The young Canadian driver immediately got a feel for the track and qualified 11th, but at the end of the heats he was 21st despite a 2nd, 3rd and 5th place (an accident forced him to withdraw from one). In prefinal he did an important comeback and at race end he was 7th. In Final Stroll completed his great recovery and closed with a grand 2nd place.

“By now it’s trivial to point out that he had several contacts in the heats: in this category everyone has them. In prefinal, however, he was lucky to be able to pull nicely out of several accidents and the same thing goes for the final where he started off really well. The kid is fast and has what it takes to win. All he needs now is some power. And I’d just like to remind everyone that he’s only 12 years old and races with kids that are 15. I think a podium in the WSK Euro Series at his age and at the third important race of his life is more than satisfactory”.
